While building a home for a family in need in eastern Europe, Bobcat gridders enjoy local culture
The house is coming along great. We won't be able to finish the whole project during our time here, but the walls should be complete and that will give us a strong sense of accomplishment and give us something to be really proud of. The bricks are three-quarters of the way up on most of the walls, and when that's finished we'll place some special beams on top of where the windows will be. We'll also put some finishing touches on the corners of the house.
We're staying at a hotel in downtown Gliwice, which is within walking distance of many shops and restaurants. We've been spending a lot of our free time just exploring the city, and there are a lot of different snacks and drinks to try. The food here is interesting, the local meals include a lot of potatoes, sausage, and pickled vegetables – even at breakfast! We've made a couple extra trips to McDonald's in the evening. Dinner is a smaller meal here, and we don't always get our fill. Lunch is the main meal, and always involves some soup and usually pierogi.
We stick out pretty clearly when walking around town, but that's been a great conversation starter. People wonder what a large group of people is doing in Poland, and we usually find a way to get around any language barrier. It's been fun to interact with the people of Gliwice.
We worked with a Polish football team today, and that was a lot of fun. Players aren't as serious about our sport here, but it seems to be growing and catching on in this part of Europe and I think they enjoyed working with us.
