MSU stages final major scrimmage of the spring at 2 pm in Bobcat Stadium
BOZEMAN, Montana – There are goals large and small for spring scrimmages throughout college football, but one stands among all other for Montana State defensive coordinator Ty Gregorak.
"Get out of that thing healthy" stands as the most important objective during the 2018 Sonny Holland Classic Spring Scrimmage, which begins at 2 pm Saturday in Bobcat Stadium. The scrimmage segment of the day's proceedings is expected to begin at 2:30 pm, and the event is free and open to the public.
The first portion of the scrimmage will feature live work with the first two units on both sides of the ball. Some of that will be situational, red zone and two-minute work, but much will be live. "We'll have some play-it segments that will turn the guys loose," said MSU head coach Jeff Choate. "We want those ones and twos to get some work in, but a lot of this is about evaluating young guys."
MSU offensive coordinator Brian Armstrong said running the offense properly also ranks high on his list. "Execution is always important, obviously," he said. "We're going to get some work in the low red zone. We're going to start in there, and scoring touchdowns in the red zone is an area we need to improve a lot from last year."
Armstrong said getting a good look at younger players is important. "We want to get our ones some work, but other than that it's about who are the twos, who are the threes, who do we think are the young guys that can help us next year."
Gregorak said the focus remains on playing the style of football Montana State's staff teaches, but caution is also important. "I just want to see dudes fly around, have fun, hopefully take the football away a couple of times, and get out of it healthy," he said. "I'm a little scarred about Jacob (Hadley's) injury last year (when the projected starter lost his 2017 season in the spring's final session). I just want to come out with a good exchange against the offense and come out healthy."
After Saturday's scrimmage the Cats practice without pads once next week before heading to Great Falls for the Triangle Classic Banquet (Friday, April 13) and youth clinic (Saturday, April 14).
