Bobcat coach Jeff Choate hopes to evaluate players rising to elevated roles
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State turns it loose for the first time this spring on Saturday when the Montana State football team moves into live scrimmage mode in Bobcat Stadium.
The Cats practice beginning at 10:30 am, with a 60-75 play scrimmage segment beginning about an hour later. MSU head coach Jeff Choate indicated that evaluating young players rising to elevated roles in the Bobcat program stands as task one on Saturday. "I'll be paying a lot of attention to the young offensive linemen, Tucker Rovig at quarterback, some of the young receivers, to see how they handle more game-like situations."
Saturday's live segment features the first units on offense and defense running against the second units, with a two-minute drill and red zone segments supplementing live play. "It'll be your average first scrimmage," Choate said.

The kicking game is not generally a spring emphasis, but Choate looks forward to watching a pair of newcomers to the position. The Cats will attempt "field goals as needed" during the play-it section of Saturday's practice. Jacob Byrne redshirted as a receiver a year ago, but he has moved to kicker in the off-season and reviews have been positive. Transfer Tristan Bailey brings a leg "with really good pop" to the mix.

While the team has spent sparing time playing live football through the first five practices this spring, Choate still hopes to get an early evaluation of his team's run game on Saturday, which he calls "what we do. We'll have a chance to see Karl (Tucker II) and Tyler Natee look in live situations. We know that (running the football is) our bread-and-butter. We'll work on some (run-pass option) and the intermediate and quick (passing) game, but we'll spend time working in the red zone so a lot of what you'll see is DNA-type stuff."
