Montana State Athletics is pleased to welcome Rod Woodson as this year's Triangle Classic Banquet guest speaker on April 13 in Great Falls. The banquet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 13, inside Pacific Steel and Recycling Arena at the Montana ExpoPark. The Kids' Camps begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday and are followed by a Bobcat football open practice at Memorial Stadium.
Thurman Thomas stepped into the guest speaker role at last year's banquet for Woodson, but the 17-year NFL veteran, Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee will make his Triangle Classic debut this year.
Woodson did it all during his college career at Purdue. He played running back and wide receiver on offense, played cornerback and safety on defense, and returned punts and kickoffs. As a result, it was no surprise when the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted the modern-day "triple threat" star with the 10th overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft.
Woodson gained notoriety on the Steelers defense and blossomed in his third season in the NBL by making his first Pro Bowl appearance. In 1992, he was second on the team with 100 tackles and collected six sacks. The next season, Woodson had eight interceptions, 28 passes defensed, forced two fumbles, two quarterback sacks, blocked a field goal attempt and recorded a team-high 79 solo tackles. For his effort, he was named the AFC and NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
The stellar defensive back matched his career-high eight interceptions for the Oakland Raiders in 2002. Woodson made three Super Bowl appearances and started at free safety for the Baltimore Ravens in their 34-7 Super Bowl XXXV victory over the New York Giants He was a member of the NFL 1190s All-Decade Team, was named to the Pro Bowl 11 times and in 1994, was named to the NFL's 75th Anniversary Team, one of only five active players at the time to be included.
Woodson played for the Steelers (1987-96), San Francisco 49ers (1997), Ravens (1998-2001) and Raiders (2002-03) during his professional career. He ended his NFL resume with 71 interceptions, 1,483 interception return yards, 2,363 punt return yards and 17 touchdowns. He currently holds the NFL record for interception return TDs with 12 and is still the leader in interception return yards, while he also ranks third in interceptions.
Woodson was elected in 2009 to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Triangle Classic Banquet begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 13, at Pacific Steel and Recycling Arena at Montana ExpoPark. Cost of admission is $800 for a table (includes prime rib dinners for 10) or $85 for a single dinner ticket. Ticket purchase information and contact information can be found online. All proceeds from the event support the Bobcat Club Annual Scholarship Fund. The Triangle Classic is hosted and organized by the Great Falls Bobcat Club Chapter.
