Streaks and Stuff
Montana State won the last meeting between these schools, a 45-28 victory in Bobcat Stadium in 2015. That snapped an eight-game Cal Poly win streak in the series that began with a heart-breaking 20-19 last-second Mustangs victory in 1997.
Here's a Good Story
Montana State topped Cal Poly 22-18 on October 8, 1960 in San Luis Obispo. Three weeks later, the Mustangs' season came to a tragic, premature end when the team's plane crashed during takeoff on the team's return trip after a 50-6 loss at Bowling Green. Fatalities totaled 22, and accounts of the crash and its immediate aftermath are horrific. Among the survivors were quarterback Ted Tollner, who went on to a long and successful coaching career that included time as USC's head coach.
In a game that echoes even to today's matchup between two ground-oriented teams, the Bobcats "ironed the kinks out of its winged-T offense," the Exponent reported. The Bobcats amassed 309 yards in whipping tough Cal Poly, 22-18, at San Luis Obispo. Calif."
