In-state duo helps lead Montana State to win over Grizzlies
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State linebacker Grant Collins and punter Jered Padmos each played a role in the Bobcats bringing hardware back from Missoula after Saturday's win over the Grizzlies. On Monday, they each earned some more.
The Big Sky Conference named Collins its ROOT SPORTS Defensive Player of the Week and Jered Padmos Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for their work in the playoff-clinching victory. It is the first honor for both.
A senior from Bozeman, Collins rose to the occasion when the Cats needed him the most. He was in on a team-high 12 tackles, including 1.0 for a loss and a half-sack. He forced two fumbles, recovering one.
With just over six minutes left, Collins knocked the ball from Grizzly quarterback Dalton Sneed's hands and recovered the fumble to set up MSU's go-ahead scoring drive. The resulting touchdown gave MSU its first lead, after trailing as much as 22-0. Then, with UM facing second-and-goal from the MSU four, Collins helped stop Adam Eastwood short of the goal line to set up a third-and-goal with 14 seconds to play. On that game-winning play, the Cats forced and recovered a fumble to secure the victory.
Padmos, a junior from Boulder who was named CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 last week, punted seven times in MSU's win, averaging 42.9 yards per punt and pinning the Grizzlies inside the 20-yard line four times. In helping MSU flip field position in the middle portion of the game, Padmos pinned Montana inside the five-yard line once in the second quarter and twice in the third. The Griz returned just one punt for seven yards. Montana's average starting field position for the game was its own 27.
