BOBCAT GAME DAY NOTEBOOK #8: Logan Jones' Return Slated for Today

Bobcat running back Logan Jones makes his 2018 debut this afternoon
Montana State's showdown with Idaho State today marks the Bobcats return to Holt Arena for only the second time since 2010. But it also marks a different kind of return.
Running back Logan Jones is expected to return to the Montana State backfield today after an injury that has held him out of action for months. He has been a productive player on offense and kick teams for the Bobcats throughout his career, and Jeff Choate is happy to have him back. "Logan has really been an important part of this program. I'm happy that he's back, but I'm really happy for him that he's back."
Jones is classified as a senior, but with four games remaining in a regular season in which he's yet to play he's within the allowable window to retain this year of eligibility (he played during his first three seasons at MSU without redshirting). The Kalispell product was a part-time starter during his first three seasons, rushing for 147 yards on 33 carries in that time. He's been a main cog in MSU's kick return game, winning MSU's Ken Amato Kick Teams MVP Award a year ago and returning a kickoff 100 yards against Portland State in 2016.

The Cats will be down a pair of linebackers today. Sophomores Jacob Hadley and Chad Kanow are injured and not scheduled to play. Safety Shawn Borges and receiver Willie Patterson are also out today with injuries suffered against Weber State.

It's always great to see old friends, and Idaho State's defensive coordinator is firmly on that list for Bobcat fans. Roger Cooper was a great Bobcat in the early 2000s, a high school hurdler who took a chance on Montana State as part of Mike Kramer's first recruiting class. He was a two-time First Team All-Big Sky selection, was an All-America, and earned Big Sky Defensive MVP honors in 2004. Cooper was inducted into the Bobcat Athletics Hall of Fame two years ago.

Bobcat special teams coach BJ Robertson has a simple plan to aid kicker Tristan Bailey in his first college game in a dome: "We're going to make sure both the doors (in the end zone upper levels, which face the goalposts) are closed at kickoff each half. No extra wind."

Bobcat coach Jeff Choate has never led a Montana State team into competition in Holt Arena, but he has a lot of personal experience in the venue. He played in this building as a high school player at Saint Maries High, and coached high school football and wrestling here. "When I was at Challis, Pocatello and Idaho Falls were the big towns." Choate remembers losing a game on a 53-yard field goal in Holt Arena while coaching at Post Falls.
