Bobcats Impress in Classroom During 2017 Fall Semester

With the arrival of the 2018 spring semester just a week away at Montana State University, Bobcat Athletics looks to continue the success it built in the classroom during the fall semester on the Bozeman campus.
With the arrival of the 2018 spring semester just a week away at Montana State University, Bobcat Athletics looks to continue the success it built in the classroom during the fall semester on the Bozeman campus.
Montana State's student-athletes completed the semester in December with a new high statistic. The average student-athlete Grade Point Average during the fall semester was 3.21.
"I feel like it's our strongest academic semester overall with all of our student-athletes combined in my time here," said Jamie Rizzuto, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services.
"Scottie Moler (in our Academic Center) has done a great job with our Tutoring Services. We have more tutors now and more student-athletes that are utilizing those services. I think that's a big help in improving the GPA. It's also the coaches that are pushing the academic piece really hard to our student-athletes and recruiting great students to MSU."
Among the Bobcat contingent, 64 were invited to the Oakberg Dinner, which celebrates students who achieved all A's and A-'s during the term. This dinner is named in honor of former FAR and Faculty member, Bob Oakberg. Another 85 student-athletes made their respective Dean's Lists for achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Thirty Bobcats made the President's List by earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.
"I would like to thank our student-athletes, coaches and academic staff for their dedication to academics at Montana State University," Director of Athletics Leon Costello said. "Their hard work and dedication have certainly paid off, shown by the recent accomplishments in the classroom."
The fall semester wrapped up as MSU earned an average team GPA of 3.33 across all athletic programs. That number takes into account the averages of each team's average GPA.
The Bobcats' nordic portion of its ski team held the highest team GPA of 3.64. It was followed by the women's cross country squad (3.61) and the golf team (3.60).
Also of note is the football team's 3.04 average, which is the highest team average in recent history, and an improvement from a 2.9 team average in 2016-2017.
"I think all of our teams can have a huge impact on our overall GPA, but it's incredible to see a larger team of 100-plus students setting the bar really high at a 3.0," Rizzuto said. "That's what coach (Jeff) Choate has done, he's pushed 3.0 to his guys and they've achieved it. I think that's just one of the first goals that will set the pace for the rest of the goals that they're going to reach."
