Bobcat Skiers Finish Fourth at MSU Invitational

Montana State received a pair of top five performances in the 10-kilometer freestyle to finish fourth at the MSU Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

Montana State received a pair of top five performances in the 10-kilometer freestyle to finish fourth at the MSU Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Karsten Hokanson notched MSU's best showing placing fourth in the men's with a clocking of 23:52.8 Hokanson, a product of Salt Lake City, Utah, out-sprinted Colorado's Petter Reistad to capture 39 points for the Bobcats.
"Karsten seized his first opportunity to race in a mass start this season and was able to stick with the lead pack all the way through the finish," said MSU Nordic coach Matthew Johnson.
Also notching points for Montana State were Eli Jensen, 15th, 24:42.8, and Erik Axelsson, 18th, 25:06.5. Noah Andersen finished 26th overall in 26:30.2.
Sophomore Emma Tarbath guided the Bobcat women with a fifth place showing in a time of 27:19.6. Also notching points for MSU were Johanna Taliharm, 13th, 28:29.3, and Kathleen O'Connell, 14th, 28:38.8.
"Emma had an outstanding day and skied with the top women throughout the race," Johnson said. "The women just ahead of her won races at the US Nationals last week, so her performance was incredibly strong. It was a great learning experience getting to race in a tight pack with the fastest racers in the country."
Also finishing the 10k freestyle were Montana State were Anna Fake, 17th, 29:02.7, Jordi Floyd, 26th, 30:23.2, and Maria Geisor, 28th, 32:24.6.
"This race was quite a bit different from Saturday regarding our team," Johnson said. "A few athletes have started to feel the burn from the intense race program we've had so far this year, while a few were really able to dig deep and keep afloat in the really fast field on the collegiate circuit."
Colorado dominated the MSU Invitational winning the team title with 658 points. The Buffaloes were followed by Utah 581.5, Denver 561, MSU 534, Alaska Anchorage 419, New Mexico 371, Alaska Fairbanks 217, Westminster 193.5, Wyoming 97, and Colorado Mountain College 71.
The Bobcat Nordic team will compete in the Utah Invitational, Jan. 18-19 in West Yellowstone.
