The Big Sky Conference announced its 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete Award winners Thursday, June 8, and tennis athletes Kellen Bates and Laura Middel were selected as Montana State’s award recipients
OGDEN, Utah – The Big Sky Conference announced its 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete Award winners Thursday, June 8, and tennis athletes Kellen Bates and Laura Middel were selected as Montana State's award recipients.
The two seniors were selected based upon their athletic-and-academic performances during the past academic year.
Bates helped the Montana State men's team advance to the Big Sky Conference Tournament playing atop the Bobcat lineup. He guided MSU from the No. 1 spot in singles play, finishing the season with a 5-15 overall record and 3-8 mark in Big Sky play. He also played at primarily the No. 2 position in doubles and accrued an 8-12 mark over the course of the dual season.
The Kalispell, Mont., native is currently majoring in business, with a concentration in finance and economics, and holds a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average.
Middel completed her Bobcat tenure with a strong senior year campaign and earned First Team All-Big Sky accolades. Middel went 10-9 in singles play, competing at primarily the No. 1 slot, and went 12-1 with doubles partner Chloe Goyettte.
The Hoogezand, Netherlands, native completed her career at Montana State with an impressive 54-19 doubles mark, one of the best in school history. In addition, she had a combined 94 victories during her tenure in the Blue and Gold, which ranks fifth in Bobcat school history, along with earning all-conference honors on four occasions.
Middel graduated as a business major – with a concentration in finance – this spring with a 3.98 GPA.
To qualify for the award, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade-point-average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale), be a member of the graduating class and/or have completed their last year of intercollegiate athletic eligibility, have completed at least two years of intercollegiate competition and be a letterwinner in their respective sport.
