Montana State Earns First Brawl of the Wild Series Victory

The 2016-17 edition of the Brawl of the Wild Series came to a close following the 2017 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday. That event served as the finale of head-to-head matchups between in-state rivals Montana and Montana State, with the Bobcats officially winning the Cat-Griz year-long rivalry by a 10-7 margin.
The 2016-17 edition of the annual Brawl of the Wild Series presented by Town Pump, BlueCross BlueShield and NorthWestern Energy, ended following the 2017 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento Saturday. That event served as the finale of head-to-head matchups between in-state rivals Montana and Montana State, with the Bobcats officially winning the Cat-Griz year-long rivalry by a 10-7 margin.
Montana State secured its first Brawl of the Wild since the series began ahead of the 2013-14 season. The Griz had won decisively in two of the years, with the closest series occurring during the 2014-15 season when Montana State came up short by a 9-8 margin.
The Bobcats won this year's opening matchup pitted against the Griz in volleyball on Oct. 16 by a 3-1 score. The two schools split at the 2016 Big Sky Cross Country Championships in Moscow, Idaho, and Montana swept the MSU volleyball team in Missoula on Nov. 4.
Montana State took control of the Brawl of the Wild Series when the Bobcats won the final game of 2016 football season against the Griz in Missoula on Nov. 19.
The Bobcat defense held the Griz from scoring on 10 straight drives and MSU went on a scoring spree to take a 24-7 lead. Montana State held off Montana on its home turf by outgaining the Griz offensively 405-305 yards, including a 368-113 edge on the ground.
The MSU basketball teams maintained the Bobcats' two-point advantage thanks to a nine-point rally by Tricia Binford's squad in Missoula on Feb. 4 in regulation, which resulted in a women's basketball 75-69 overtime victory.
While the men's basketball team fell to the Griz at Dahlberg Arena, it came back to help complete a sweep on the day of Montana in Worthington Arena on Feb. 25 in front of a sellout crowd and gave the 'Cats a four-point lead in the series.
That same day, the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field championships were completed with the MSU men's team finishing third overall and three spots ahead of Montana. The Bobcat women's squad had a solid showing by taking third, but the Grizzlies finished runner-up to keep their Brawl of the Wild Series hopes alive at 8-4.
Montana State didn't waste any time as it clinched the Brawl of the Wild Series in the next Cat-Griz matchup. The Bobcat women's tennis team defeated Montana, 6-1, in Bozeman at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on April 14.
The Griz earned victories in the series in a men's tennis dual April 21 and at the Big Sky Golf Championship April 23. Montana's women's track and field team finished runner-up for the second consecutive season to place ahead of MSU Saturday, but the Bobcat men's track and field team's fifth-place showing was two spots ahead of Montana for the final 10-7 margin.
