MSU holds first live scrimmage of spring
Jeff Choate carries one immediate aim into Montana State's Triangle Classic Scrimmage in Great Falls on Saturday. The scrimmage begins at 11 am in Memorial Stadium.
"I want to see the guys go out and play," MSU's second-year head coach said. The Bobcats stage their first live scrimmage of the spring in Memorial Stadium beginning at 12 noon Saturday. Choate said the session serves the purpose of "sideline mechanics, getting on and off the field, getting the play called."
Two quarterbacks with starting experience – senior Tyler Bruggman and sophomore Chris Murray split the season nearly down the middle – lead the Cats into Memorial Stadium, operating behind a veteran line anchored by Great Falls CM Russell alum Dylan Mahoney. While familiar receivers such as Mitchell Herbert and Kevin Kassis line up outside, Bobcat fans get their first live look at running back returner Nick LaSane and newcomer Jake Ropre in featured roles.
Offensive coordinator Brian Armstrong, who assumes play-calling duties after serving as offensive line coach a season ago, looks forward to his squad functioning in a game-like setting. "I want the guys to go out and play smart, fast, physical, not worry about making mistakes," he said. "I want them to take what we've worked on in the first eight practices and start creating an identity."
Defensively, the Bobcats return eight starters, led by linebackers starting Mac Bignell and Josh Hill. While the secondary is thin, particularly at the cornerback spots, defensive coordinator Ty Gregorak likes what he has to work with up front, particularly in the middle. "Our inside guys, especially Zach (Wright) and Tucker (Yates), are war daddies. They're tough, smart players who line up and go."
Saturday's scrimmage is expected to last from noon until around 1:30 pm.
