Montana State ski standout Benedicte Lyche has been named the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Women's Alpine Skier of the Year, the league office announced on Monday.
The junior from Oslo, Norway won the NCAA championship in the women's giant slalom and also earned All-America honors in the slalom with a seventh-place finish. Lyche became just the fourth Bobcat to capture an individual title at the NCAA championships, joining Tor Fageraas, Dan Brelsford and Anika Miller.
"It is awesome to see Benni get rewarded for such a great year," said MSU alpine coach Kevin Francis. "She has worked extremely hard to improve her skiing, while maintaining her aggressive attitude. This has made her more consistent without losing any of her speed. On top of that, Benni struggled to find the mental edge this year but she figured something out before the NCAAs which she will take into the off-season. I'm excited to see what she can do in her senior year."
Lyche's NCAA title was her lone win of the season and she had three total podium (top three) finishes. In three seasons at Montana State, she is a four-time All-American, including three times in the giant slalom.
