Cats look for continued improvement before taking Easter weekend off
Brian Armstrong's wish list for Friday morning's Montana State football practice, which features the longest stretch of live football so far this spring, is simple.
"Guys making plays," Montana State's offensive coordinator says with a smile.
The Bobcats scrimmage "for about 30 or 45 minutes," in the estimation of head coach Jeff Choate, beginning at about 10 am in Bobcat Stadium on Friday. After warming up at 9:30 am, Choate said the team will "tee the ball up and go. We're going to let them go through a live scrimmage, then get the things done that we need to – a little bit of individual (drills), a little bit of special teams stuff – after we've done the vast part of our scrimmaging. We'll do about an hour-and-a-half of good exchange, good tempo, just open things up and let the guys go play."
Armstrong said his offense looks for some measure of redemption after last Saturday's first spring scrimmage. "We didn't have our best day last Saturday in Great Falls in terms of guys making plays," he said. "I thought we had a good practice Wednesday and responded to the adversity we had Saturday, now I want to carry it into (Friday) morning."
While he said "our base (offense is) installed," Friday is his unit's first opportunity to implement "some Chris Murray-specific stuff" for MSU's sophomore quarterback. He also lauded the play of both Tyler Bruggman and Brady McChesney, and said as a unit MSU's quarterbacks "are getting better. I don't think anyone would accuse us of being a program that's going to throw it around 60 or 70 times a game, but we need to make some strides in the passing game and I really think that's happening."
Choate praised his defense's work last weekend. "The film looked like what I saw on the field," he said. "The defense's productivity was good, but the offense contributed to that with mistakes."
After Friday's practice the team returns from an Easter weekend break for the team's final full practices of the spring on Monday and Wednesday before the Sonny Holland Classic scrimmage on Saturday, April 22.
