Montana State sophomore Stephanie Gartner picked the right moment to capture her first collegiate individual title winning the 2017 RMISA/NCAA West Regional giant slalom crown, Friday afternoon at Beaver Creek, Colo., to lift the Bobcats atop the team standing after two events.
Gartner, a product of Calgary, Alberta, posted a two-run total of 1:48.32. She clocked the fastest second-run of the day in 54.94.
"Stephanie scored her first college race win with great skiing," said MSU head alpine coach Kevin Francis. "She is peaking at the right time. Everyone is gunning for an NCAA spot and the level of competition is very high right now."
Also helping the Bobcat women to its dominant performance were Benedictine Lyche and Kari Hole, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Lyche notched a two-run clocking of 1:48.80, while Hole, who notched the second fastest second-run timed in at 1:48.95.
"Benni and Kari also skied really well today to put three ladies in the top five, which is a first for us this season," Francis added.
Mia Henry, 17th, 1:51.22, and Jocelyn McCarthy, 22nd, 1:53.32, also completed the course for the Bobcats.
The MSU men's team was guided by All-American David Neuhauser, who finished third with a two-run total of 1:45.15. He was followed in the top 10 by Morten Bakke, who placed ninth in 1:46.00.
"On the men's side, David (Neuhauser) had a great day and probably had more in the tank but it was great to see him ski solidly and still be so fast," Francis commented.
Also contributing for the Bobcats were Jeffrey Bell, 16th, 1:47.04, Patrick Carry, 22nd, 1:47.76, and Garret Driller, 24th, 1:48.41. Freshman Addison Dvoracek did not finish his opening run.
