Driller Named to 2017 Junior World Championship Ski Team

Montana State junior ski standout Garret Driller is one of eight men to be named to the 2017 FIS Alpine Junior World Championship team.
Montana State junior ski standout Garret Driller is one of eight men to be named to the 2017 FIS Alpine Junior World Championship team. He is the first Bobcat in history to be named to the squad. The team will represent the United States in Åre, Sweden, in six events, March 8-14.
"It is great to see Garret's motivation and focus pay off," said MSU alpine coach Kevin Francis. "He's had a race win and multiple podiums on the college circuit and incredible results at on the NorAm circuit, which is the top level of ski racing in North America."
The product of Truckee, Calif., won the Seawolf Invitational slalom title two weeks ago in Anchorage, Alaska. He was also runner-up in slalom at the MSU Invite in early January. Driller, who garnered All-America honors last season at the NCAA championships, is currently second in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association in NCAA slalom qualification points with 77. He is listed ninth in giant slalom with 54 points.
"Garret has put himself in position to compete for the NCAA title as well as a World Junior title within a week period in March," Francis added. "He's been working harder than ever and his attitude and focus will give him a great chance. I can't wait to see what he can pull off."
The U.S. team will have a good chance to capture the prestigious Marc Hodler Trophy, awarded to the team with the best overall performance. Last year, Austria took the honor followed by Switzerland and Canada.
Both the U.S. men and women will get some solid time training together in Kvitfjell, Norway prior to hitting the slopes in Åre. The 2017 Junior Worlds will include men's and women's downhill, super-G, alpine combined, slalom, giant slalom and a mixed team event.
