Montana natives feted after leading Bobcats to win over Grizzlies
Montana State closed its 2017 football season with a win over Montana Saturday, and was rewarded by the Big Conference on Monday. Senior linebacker Mac Bignell and sophomore punter Jered Padmos each earned weekly player of the week kudos from the league.
Bignell recorded 10 tackles, including 2.5 behind the line of scrimmage, and recovered a fumble in Montana State's 31-23 win over Montana Saturday at Bobcat Stadium. The senior from Drummond led a Bobcat defense that held Montana to 12 points below its season scoring average, and also recorded a half-sack, a quarterback hurry, and a pass breakup.
In his final game in the Blue and Gold, Bignell saved his biggest plays for the game's biggest moments. He recovered a UM fumble on the Grizzlies' second-to-last possession to stop an important drive, and logged his sack on the first play of Montana's final drive of the game. Five of Bignell's tackles came in the fourth quarter. Bignell's fumble recovery was the fifth in his career, moving him into a fifth-place tie in school history in that category. He already owns MSU's fumbles forced record. The Drummond, Montana, product shares the award with Weber State's Taron Robinson.
Padmos played a crucial, if relatively unnoticed, role in MSU's win. The sophomore from Boulder, Montana, punted seven times averaging 42.0 yards a punt. His longest was 51 yards, and he pinned the Grizzlies inside their own 20-yard line four times. Most importantly, his directional punting combined with MSU's excellent coverage held UM return specialist Jerry Louie-McGee without a punt return in the fourth quarter after he'd combined for 119 total return yards earlier in the game. In just nine games this season, Padmos pinned the opponent inside the 20 16 times on 39 punts, with six of at least 50 yards.
