MSU won in dramatic fashion at UNC, and likely won't be invited back for Homecoming
Bobcat Football Sunday Notebook
October 22, 2017 – Montana State 27, Northern Colorado 24 in Greeley
Montana State won in walk-off fashion for the first time since 2010 on Saturday, beating Northern Colorado 27-24 on a 27-yard Gabe Peppenger field goal as time expired. The Bobcats out-scored UNC 20-3 in the second half, limiting the bears to 78 yards and four first downs after halftime. Sophomore quarterback Chris Murray led Montana State's comeback by rushing for 67 yards and throwing for 139 in the fourth quarter. Senior receiver Mitchell Herbert was on the business end of five completions in the decisive final period, gaining 87 of those yards. In a cross-wind gusting up to 30 miles an hour, Peppenger calmly nailed both of his field goal attempts and all three of his extra points to account for one-third of MSU's points. Before Saturday, Bobcat kickers had accounted for just 22 of the team's 142 points (15%). The win makes MSU 2-0 all-time as Northern Colorado's Homecoming guest, 1-1 in Homecoming games this season (MSU dropped its own to Weber State).
Player of the Week Nominees
Offense – QB Chris Murray (6-2, 185, So, Inglewood, CA) – Montana State's sensational sophomore quarterback checked another first off his list Saturday, leading his team a fourth-quarter comeback for the first time as the Bobcats beat Northern Colorado 27-24 in Greeley. He finished the day with 26 rushes for 150 yards and one touchdown, while throwing for 222 yards and one touchdown on 20-for-35 passing (two interceptions). Murray engineered 73-yard, 13-play game-winning drive that culminated in Gabe Peppenger's field goal as time expired. That drive capped a marvelous fourth quarter by Murray, in which he carried the ball nine times for 67 yards, turning five of those carries into first downs and another into a touchdown. He was 7-for-13 passing for 139 yards in in the fourth quarter, converting three third downs into first downs. On the game's final drive, Murray faced three third downs, converting two with passes (one on a third-and-15) and another with his legs. Murray's 150 rushing yards give him nine career 100-yard games out of his 18 career contests, and moves him into 16th in school history with 1,641 career yards.
Defense – none
Special Teams – K Gabe Peppenger (6-0, 205, So, Missoula, MT) – Gabe Peppenger scored nine of Montana State's 27 points and sealed the Bobcats' first true regulation time walk-off win since 2005 with a 27-yard field goal. Peppenger was perfect on the day, connecting on both of his field goals and all three PATs on a day when cross-winds gusted up to 30 miles per hour. The sophomore from Missoula has helped guide the Bobcat kicking game out of choppy waters by connecting on three straight field goals after MSU began the year 1-for-5 in that category.
