CATS IN CAMP DAY 4: 'Spirited Day' Serves as Prelude to Full Contact

MSU dons full pads for first time on Wednesday
The stage got bigger for the Bobcats Tuesday. And the team responded with what head coach Jeff Choate called a "really good, spirited day."
Moving from the grass practice field into Bobcat Stadium mid-practice, Choate said, gave his squad a burst. "It seems like sometimes just changing venues, getting our individual work done on the grass then bringing it into the Stadium, just changes the dynamic a little bit. I thought we had great energy during our inside run period on the grass and that carried over into seven-on-seven and team. There was lots of really good verbal combat on both sides."
Montana State's last practice before entering the full-contact phase of fall camp met Choate's approval, particularly in terms of key individuals stepping forward. "We've challenged these guys that one of our goals during fall camp is for the leaders and the playmakers to start to emerge, and you can see that start to happen. I was really pleased. (It was) a really good fourth day of practice."
After a bounce-back day by the offense on Monday, Choate liked how both units responded Tuesday. "I thought they did a tremendous job, and the offense did a nice job, too. There was a lot of tight coverage today, a lot of contested balls, (the offense) only had two explosives in seven-on(-seven), and it's an offensive drill anyway. There was a really good exchange in our 11-on-11 period, so I thought the defense rose to the challenge and improved and got their turnovers, and offensively there were some really positive things."
Choate is seeing progress from junior quarterback Tyler Bruggman, who comes to MSU from Scottsdale College. "I saw a comfort level in Tyler today that I've been waiting to see," Choate said. "You can tell that he was really in kind of a groove and that was really positive."
Montana State's fifth practice of the fall – and it's first in full pads – begins at 10:45 am Wednesday.
