MSU offensive duo spurred offense that improved throughout 2016
One arrived on the scene with a flash and was a sensation for most of the season, the other methodically built an outstanding campaign and emerged as a foundation of his position group. Quarterback Chris Murray and offensive tackle Mitch Brott each earned First Team Freshman All-America honors from Hero Sports on Tuesday.
Murray, from Inglewood, California, became Montana State's starting quarterback before the season's seventh game, but he'd already impacted the Bobcats offense. Murray rushed for 187 yards and three touchdowns against Sacramento State, and in his initial start he rushed for 131 yards and threw for 199 at Weber State. Murray threw for 778 yards as a true freshman, rushing for another 860 yards. He accounted for a dozen rushing touchdowns and six through the air.
Murray capped his freshman season in spectacular style, leading MSU to a season-ending 24-17 win at Montana and earning Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year honors. "Chris' poise and growth late in the season impressed me," MSU head coach Jeff Choate said. "He grew to understand his role and the importance of valuing the football, and his explosiveness was obvious. I'm excited about his future here at Montana State, and I'm excited to watch his development."
Brott joined Montana State's during the season's second week and never left. He played half the season at left tackle, and helped spur a productive ground game. The Bobcats rushed for 212.0 yards a game on the season, including 626 in the final two games. "I thought he was really impressive from beginning to end," said MSU offensive line coach Brian Armstrong. "Left tackle is probably the most difficult job on the offensive line and he did that for half the season, and did a nice job. Mitch definitely has a bright future, and I look forward to watching him progress."
