BOBCAT GAME DAY NOTEBOOK #7: Bobcats Face Physical Weber State

After snowy week, Bobcats face tough Wildcats in Ogden
Montana State's coaches have worked hard with Bobcat players throughout the season in a wide range of areas. One thing the staff hasn't had to worry about, head coach Jeff Choate says, is effort. He saw a prime example of it at the end of last Saturday's home loss to Northern Arizona.
"I like the fight," he said of his team. "The play Gunnar Brekke made at the end of the game (chasing down an NAU defensive player who was about to score on a fumble recovery, preventing a touchdown) was a great example. He just didn't want them to score another touchdown. And I didn't either."
Choate is proud of his team's effort as it passes the halfway mark of his first season. "They're working hard. They're fighting. I like that about this group."

The Bobcat starting lineup features several changes today against Weber State. Chris Murray is scheduled to make his first start at quarterback, Tre'von Strong and Chris Harris start at the corners, and Johnny D'Agostino misses the game with an injury. Jayshawn Gates is scheduled to start. John Walker is expected to play in spite of not starting for the first time this season.

Montana State's football program has featured key players from California since at least World War II, and part of the adjustment for West Coast players to Bozeman is the weather. Bobcat newcomers from the Golden State got a taste of fall weather in Bozeman in the recent times.
"We got them dressed in the right gear and they were good," first-year MSU head coach said of his young warm-climate players. "A few of them made snow angels on Tuesday, they were throwing snow balls at each other. I think they were having fun."
One player caught Choate's attention. "We were walking onto the field Tuesday and Lukas McCarthy said, 'Why didn't it snow right on the field?' We explained that Sarge (MSU facilities superstar Dave Ming) cleans off the field when it snows, and Lukas said he was kidding.'"

Two members of Montana State's 1984 National Championship coaching staff exchanged hellos in the Stewart Stadium press box early Saturday. Dan Davies is part of MSU's radio crew, while Bill Diedrick is now a scout for the BC Lions.

Legendary Weber State SID Brad Larsen, who was with the Wildcats from 1979 to 2013, began his career on this day in 1979.

MSU defensive coordinator Ty Gregorak, who faced Weber State a season ago while at Montana, knows two things for sure about the Wildcats' offense. "One, they're going to be physical," he said. "They look like grown men. Two, they don't make a lot of mistakes on alignment. They don't make many mistakes."
