Bobcat Men Place Two in Top 10 on Final Day of MSU Invite

Sawyer Kesselheim continued his early season dominance and Forrest Mahlen returned to the Montana State line-up as the duo both posted top 10 finishes at the MSU Invitational, Monday morning at Bohart Ranch.
Sawyer Kesselheim continued his early season dominance and Forrest Mahlen returned to the Montana State line-up as the duo both posted top 10 finishes at the MSU Invitational, Monday morning at Bohart Ranch.
Kesselheim, who placed third in the freestyle on Sunday, once again guided the Bobcat Nordic squad finishing sixth in the 20-kilometer classic race in a time of 1:08:40.1. Mahlen, who was a First-Team All-America performer last winter, returned to the MSU squad this weekend. The Anchorage, Alaska product finished ninth overall in a clocking of 1:08:54.1
Completing MSU's scoring was Erik Axelsson, who finished 15th overall in 1:09:28.3.
Other Bobcat finishers included Karsten Hokanson, 18th, 1:10:02.7, Martin Muan, 22nd, 1:11:06.7, and Noah Andersen, 27th, 1:12:58.7.
Denver's Mortiz Madlener won the men's individual title in 1:07:44.7.
The Bobcat women were led by Lina Hultin. The native of Orebro, Sweden placed 17th overall in the women's 15k classic in a time of 1:00:51.1. Also scoring in MSU's top three were Cambria McDermott, 24th, 1:05:16.3, and Johanna Taliharm, 26th, 1:05:40.8.
Also finishing for the Bobcats were Gretchen Burkholder, 27th, 1:05:53.4, and Olivia Ekblad, 30th, 1:11:09.1.
DU also captured the women's individual classic crown as Linn Eriksen notched a clocking of 54:50.3.
The Pioneers, who entered the final event with a five point lead over Colorado, held on to capture the MSU Invitational team title. DU finished with 629 points, followed by CU 625, Utah 598, New Mexico 501, MSU 465, Alaska-Anchorage 406, Westminster 251, Wyoming 123, and Colorado Mountain College 55.
Montana State will compete at the Colorado Invitational Jan. 22-24 in Steamboat Springs.
