Bobcat Skiers Finish Fourth at Utah Invitational; Men’s Slalom Team Dominates

The Montana State men’s Nordic team placed three skiers in the top 10 and senior Cambria McDermott finished fourth on the women’s side as the Bobcats finished fourth at the University of Utah Invitational, Monday morning at Soldier Hollow.

Combined with the alpine squad, MSU finished with 492 points- its highest output since placing fourth at the 2012 RMISA/NCAA West Region Championships.
For the second consecutive race, Bozeman product and senior Sawyer Kesselheim led the Bobcats, placing sixth overall covering the 15-kilometer classic race in 38:53.1. He was followed closely by Karsten Hokanson, seventh, 39:40.9, and Erik Axelsson, tenth, 39:54.0.
Noah Andersen, 22nd, 41:30.3, rounded-out the Bobcat men's team.
Colorado's Mads Stroem won the men's classic in 38:23.1.
McDermott, a senior from Putney, Vermont, also guided the Bobcat women's contingent for the second straight day. McDermott finished the 10-kilometer course in 29:58.5. Also scoring for MSU were Anika Miller, 15th, 32:11.5, and Lina Hultin, 18th, 32:28.5.
Olivia Ekblad just missed scoring points for MSU finishing 19th in 32:32.2.
Utah's Sloan Storey captured the women's classic crown in 29:36.6.
Utah came from two spots back to win its own invitational behind 184 points from its Nordic squad on Monday. The Utes finished with 632 points and were followed by Colorado 619, Denver 579, MSU 492, New Mexico 479, Alaska Anchorage 384, Westminster 258 and Colorado Mountain College 73.
As the Utah Invitational finished, the MSU Invitational reached the halfway point following Monday's slalom races, which saw the Bobcats dominate the field on the men's side with three racers in the top 10.
David Neuhauser finished third overall with a two-run total of 1:44.13, while Morten Bakke, seventh, 1:44.48, and Garret Driller, ninth, 1:44.84 helped MSU to 81 points, the highest of all RMISA schools on the men's side.
Only two racers finished for Montana State on the women's side as Benedicte Lyche had her second consecutive strong performance, finishing sixth in the slalom with a two-run clocking of 1:50.76. Also scoring for the Bobcats was Tenaya Driller, 21st, 1:55.52.
"Overall, it was a great weekend for the Bobcat skiers," said MSU Alpine Head Coach Kevin Francis. "Everybody skied well at one time or another. With the first part of the season under our belt, we need to get some training in before our next meet so we can continue to improve upon our solid early season into the postseason."
