BOBCAT POSITION PREVIEW 2015: Quarterbacks
8/3/2015 2:20:00 PM | Football
One year after pitched competition, Dakota Prukop set to lead Bobcats
Leading to the opening of fall camp on Sunday, August 9, we will preview each position group entering the 2015 season. Today, a look at Montana State's quarterbacks...
Returning Starter
Dakota Prukop (6-2, 200, Jr)
Returning Letterman
Jake Bleskin (6-1, 200, Sr)
Redshirt
none
Returning Squad Member
none
Incoming Freshman
Ben Folsom (6-2, 198, Fr), Jordan Hoy (6-1, 187, Fr), Brady McChesney (5-11, 170, Fr)
Quarterbacks Coach
Tim Cramsey (3rd year at MSU)
Overview
For the fourth time in five years, MSU benefits from a dynamic returning starter at quarterback. Dakota Prukop's electric 2014 performance - his 3,525 total yards was third-best in school history, for starters - allows offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey to build on MSU's offensive explosion from a season ago. It also allows for a major expansion of the playbook. Prukop's dual-threat status (2,559 passing, 966 rushing) creates one-on-one opportunities for other offensive skill players that they have proven the ability to win. Behind Prukop resides perhaps the most accomplished no. two quarterback in the FCS, Jake Bleskin, and a dual for the third spot on the depth chart between true freshmen Jordan Hoy, Ben Folsom and Brady McChesney.
Rob's Report
From Head Coach Rob Ash
"We were able to get a little deeper into Coach Cramsey's offensive system (during the spring) in the pass game because of the experience of Dakota Prukop and Jake Bleskin. We were all over the map with the pass game, although we didn't do much with the quarterback run game because we didn't want to make the quarterbacks live (to be tackled), so that piece needs some refining in the fall. Our quarterbacks have shown the ability to handle a wide range of elements in the offense."
Quarterback Notes
After beginning every season from 2006-10 with a starting quarterback different from the previous season, four of the ensuing five campaigns have begun with a returning starter... with three of Montana State's five quarterbacks enter 2015 having graduated from Treasure State high schools (Jake Bleskin, Ben Folsom and Brady McChesney), the Bobcats haven't featured a full-time starter since the days of Rob Compson (1996-98)... offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey is the first man to hold that position at MSU for three seasons since Don Bailey (2001-06)
Fall Camp Considerations:
Offensive Coordinator Tim Cramsey
"This is a different fall camp than last year, where it was a competition and we had to put Dakota in situations that were positive and Jake into situations that were positive and let them battle it out. This year we know who one is, we know who two is, and now we can work on getting stronger at what we're good at but moreso work on things we need to improve at. It's what you saw in the spring, where we kept Dakota in the pocket and made him go through reads, one-two-three, and we got Jake outside and had him run around in the quarterback run game. And obviously we have to get Jordan Hoy ready to play. We have our system in, now it's just a matter of how many ways we can run a play."
