CATS IN CAMP NOTEBOOK: Day #8

Red zone work energizes Bobcats
Montana State's first true day of two-a-days provide "an interesting day," Bobcat head coach Rob Ash said Monday.
"We had a couple guys get sick, a couple guys come up lame right at the beginning of practice, that kind of threw our depth chart into turmoil," Ash said. "Tyrone (Fa'anono) was out, Shiloh (LaBoy) was out, they both got sick, a couple other guys were banged up."
The result? Several players moving out of their comfort zone. "(Senior defensive tackle) Taylor Sheridan had to go play some defensive end, JP (Flynn) was sitting out this morning so the offensive line was kind of changed around. All that was disconcerting, but at the same time guys played with a lot of energy and I thought we got a lot out of it."
Much of the team segment involved the offense working in scoring position. "Obviously today the emphasis was the low red zone," Ash said. "We had a skeleton (drill) and team, and that got people fired up. That's when games get won and lost, those crucial plays in the red zone. There was tremendous energy that kind of helped us get over the fact that some of the guys were not out there."
SPECIALIZATION: The middle week of fall camp often draws the spotlight to the kicking game, and that happens this week in Bobcat camp. "This is an important time for special teams. We're trying to shore up the kickoff (coverage)," Ash said. "The one unit we don't have in is punt return, which is the one we usually do last. We'll do that (Monday) afternoon or Tuesday. Then the next thing to figure out is who's playing on each unit. We haven't got to that yet, but it's a good problem because I think we have good depth for special teams this year."
INJURIES, ETC.: Several players missed practice Tuesday, but Ash said as of mid-day none were considered long-term problems. JP Flynn missed practice serving a "suspension" for throwing a punch during Saturday's scrimmage. "I told the officials, call anything (Saturday) just the way you'll call it in a game. If there's a fight we wanted unsportsmanlike conduct penalties or suspension, however the call would go in a game is what we wanted. JP's actions would have warranted a suspension, so he served that this morning."
COMING UP: Montana State will practice Tuesday at 9:15 am, and again Wednesday at 9:15 am and 4 pm. The team gets Thursday off before practicing twice Friday.
