Pads, run game emerge on Tuesday
One of the significant moments in the ebb and flow of a football team's fall camp arrived for the Bobcats Tuesday, when the shoulder pads came on and the run game broke out.
Ninth-year Montana State head coach Rob Ash was pleased with what he saw. "With the shoulder pads on there was finally a little focus on the run game, particularly some inside runs," Ash said. "The first day you do those it's kind of a cluster, but I thought as the day went along we began to feel it out a little bit better. It's typical sloppiness you kind of expect on the first day you have the pads on."
While evaluation of skill-position players flows throughout the fall, linemen only really ply their trade in contact situations. "I thought the ones, especially, were really solid," Ash said of the team's projected starting offensive line. "The defense had some pressures and some blitzes in, and I though the number ones were by and large right on it."
The Bobcats return to the practice field Wednesday morning before a respite from practice on Thursday. The team practices in full gear Friday morning before the first full-contact session of the camp on Saturday at 9:15 in Bobcat Stadium.
INJURY UPDATE: Manny Kalfell's leg injury Monday was determined to be a hamstring, and he'll be miss an indefinite period of time… running backs Chad Newell and Gunnar Brekke, the top two on the team's preseason depth chart, each missed most of Monday's practice with nagging leg injuries. Neither are expected to long-term, although a return date is not set for either junior.
