Bobcats Avoid Day Two Pitfalls as Camp Continues
Like weeds creeping into a well-manicured lawn in the springtime, Rob Ash knows that unwelcome habits can encroach on otherwise productive football practices early in a team's fall camp.
"Sometimes in practice two you get one of two things," Montana State's ninth-year head coach said after his team's second fall practice Monday morning. "You get a valley after day one's peak, and we did not have that today, so I was happy with that. And sometimes you get some helmets-only heroes who want to go too hard, they're tired of the helmets-only tempo and they're going to show everybody what they can do. We didn't have any of that, either."
In fact, Ash was pleased with his team's second session because of how similar it was to the first. "(Sunday) was not as high as a lot of day ones, which I told the team is good," he said. "(Monday) was more even to (Sunday), rather than having a big gap, which is also good."
Leaderships is one of the areas Ash likes to identify early in camp, and he has been pleased with that thus far. "I think we have good leaders across the board," he said. "Our captains are great, but we have guys like JP (Flynn) and John (Weidenaar) and Joel (Horn) in the offensive line, we have good leaders in addition to Taylor (Sheridan, a team captain) in the D-line. Linebackers are young, but I think those guys have a good grasp for what it takes, and they're working hard. We're going to try to develop leaders in every position group, and I'm excited about that so far."
Montana State returns to practice Tuesday morning, the first day the team is allowed to don shoulder pads. Ash said the day's work will "show us a little more on the run game," but otherwise will look similar to the first two practices. MSU's first full-contact, tackle-to-the-ground session is Saturday at 9:15 am.
INJURY REPORT: Junior running back Gunnar Brekke missed most of Monday's practice with tightness in his legs… senior receiver Manny Kalfell suffered a leg injury during Monday's practice and missed the rest of the day, and a prognosis is expected Tuesday… sophomore defensive end missed parts of Monday's practice with what Ash characterized as a "camp injury" which he said is not expected to cause long-range problems.
