Denver gave the Bobcats a couple of good D-linemen in the late '90s
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2015 season on September 3 against Fort Lewis College. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set will be welcomed enthusiastically via e-mail at: blamberty@msubobcats.com. Complaints about featured players also welcome, but possibly with less enthusiasm.
#90
Taylor Sheridan, DT: Taylor Sheridan returns as a 2014 starter, logging 50 tackles as a junior with five for a loss and two sacks while starting all 13 games, and was elected team captain by his teammates this spring. Sheridan, who attended middle school in Bozeman before moving to Colorado, has been a productive playmaker in the middle of the line for three seasons.
Spotlight Player: It's easy to remember Dan Ogden's football career for things unrelated to football. He loved to talk, on the field and off, about football or anything else. He carried around a boom box and played classic rock. As a Bobcat, Ogden was hilarious and engaging, and he suffered what appeared from the press box to be devastating, career-threatening injuries two or three times per half, only to trot back onto the field a play or two later. He cooperated with media requests more enthusiastically than any player in recent memory. But what really sticks out about Dan Ogden is his play. He finished his career with 17 sacks and 31 tackles-for-loss. As a freshman (wearing #93) he intercepted a Dixie State pass and rumbled 62 yards for a touchdown. He finished up as a two-time First Team All-Big Sky choice, earning All-America honors as a senior.
Notable #90s in the Bobcat Past: John Taylor is a rare individual whose positive impact on his college athletics program range far beyond production as a student-athlete. Taylor was a First Team All-Big Sky defensive lineman in 2001, and found himself with the Detroit Lions the next season. MSU's 2001 squad was the vanguard of team's 21st century defensive revival. With veterans like Taylor and Nick Morasko leading the way, a wave of brilliant defenders – Jon Montoya, Adam Cordeiro, Kane Ioane, Roger Cooper – found their footing and eventually led the Bobcats to the top of the Big Sky. Taylor racked up 11 tackles-for-loss as a senior, blocking a kick and forcing a fumble… Walter Robinson is the prototype developmental player. The man who preceded Taylor in #90 was, like Taylor, from the Denver area. Not as accomplished as his successor, he nonetheless was a team captain and started as a senior.
Through the years: Gerry Albinger (1974), Larry Kolbe (1975), Tom Powell (1976-78), Rod Lyman (1979), Tim Ellinghouse (1982-83), Bob Oyster (1984), Dan Frazier (1985), David Worstell (1986-87), Robert Zsidisin (1988-89), Ryan Springer (1991), Walter Robinson (1993-97), Jonathan Taylor (1998-2001), Ryan Cogley (2002-04), Brandon Hoffenbacker (2006-07), Evan Morris (2008), Dan Ogden (2009-10), Taylor Sheridan (2011-present)
