Dusty Daws was really good at snapping footballs to punters and holders
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2015 season on September 3 against Fort Lewis College. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set will be welcomed enthusiastically via e-mail at: blamberty@msubobcats.com. Complaints about featured players also welcome, but possibly with less enthusiasm.
#96
Current #96 – Zach Wright, DL, New Braunfels, TX: Zach Wright redshirted in 2014, but turned heads by flashing excellence during spring drills. He is a strong, physical player who enters camp as the second defensive end behind Tyrone Fa'anono. He was an all-district player at New Braunfels (Tex.) High School.
Spotlight Player: There's something special and rare abaout being able to say you're the best at what you do, and Dusty Daws is among those that know the feeling. While filling many roles as a scrimmage player during his time at MSU (2001-04), he will always be remembered as a long snapper without peer. Daws held that role from his first game through his last, attracting considerable attention to a position that generally works in anonymity. During his senior season he earned Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week honors, was Don Hansen's National Special Teams Player of the Week, and was named All-America Long Snapper by I-AA.org. Daws was a second generation Bobcat All-America, joinin his father Brad.
Notable #96s in the Bobcat Past: One of BBTN's all-time favorites made #96 a feared site from 2009-12. Zach Minter was a wrecking ball, creating havoc and making highlight-reel plays seem common. A Third Team All-America as a junior in 2011, Minter may not have gained the recognition of his counterparts outside – superstar Dane Fletcher at the beginning of his career, Buchanan Award winners Caleb Schreibeis and Brad Daly at the end – but he was as integral to the success of three straight Big Sky Championship squads.
Through the years: Boyd Burtsch (1983), Ron Hanson (1984-87), Larry Keltner (1988), Walter Sampson (1989-90), Pat Call (1991), Rob Brandland (1992-94), Jeremy Curry (1995-96), Kevin Kimball (1997-98), Dusty Daws (2000-04), Jason Macciola (2005), Paul Bartsch (2006-08), Zach Minter (2009-12), Monte Folsom (2013), Zach Wright (2014-)
