Montana State Women’s Tennis Team Drops Yolo Causeway Matches

Montana State will host Montana as part of the Brawl of the Wild series, Saturday, April 4 at 10 a.m. at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.

The Montana State women's tennis team lost a pair of matches along the Yolo Causeway on Saturday, dropping a 6-1 decision at UC Davis, before falling 4-3 to perennial Big Sky Conference power Sacramento State in the nightcap.

In the opening match, Montana State's top player Laura Middel was the only Bobcat to produce a point against UC Davis. The sophomore from Hoogezand, Netherlands dispatched the Aggies' Layla Sanders via retirement with the score sitting at 7-5, 1-2. MSU sophomore Jessica Brycki also had a hard-fought match, winning the opening set 6-2, before UCD's Lani-Rae Green rallied to capture the final two sets 6-3, 6-4.

After crossing the causeway, MSU faced No. 73 Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference match. The Bobcats upset the Hornets in doubles action. The Hornets opened with a win at No. 3 doubles, before MSU's Liana Bates and Naomi Holopainen followed with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Ana Loaiza Esquivias and Daria Sacchencko. Middel and Brycki combined for a 7-5 win over SAC's Deimante Bulatovaite and Alina Soltanici at top spot to give the Bobcats the first point.

Sacramento State then rattled off three straight singles matches, winning at Nos. 6, 5 and 2, respectively, before Bobcat newcomer Naomi Holopainen knocked-off Loaiza-Esquivias 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to pull MSU to within a 3-2 deficit. Soltanici clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Middel, before Brycki gave the Bobcats its third point with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Anna-Maria Nau at No. 3 singles.
