MSU participates in first game-like action of the spring at 1:15 pm
When Montana State takes the wraps off his team Saturday for its first full scrimmage of the spring, which begins at 1:15 pm, Rob Ash expects it to look a lot like football.
"We'll scrimmage live, unscripted, and just let it flow," said Bobcat coach Rob Ash. "We'll be looking for how players react to things as they go. The defense has some new things in that they'll evaluate, and that the offense will be forced to react to, which will be interesting on both sides."
Saturday's proceedings offer Ash and his staff the opportunity to look at many players who are rising to elevated roles this spring for the upcoming season. Many of those reside on the defense.
"We have a lot of young players on defense moving into new roles," Ash said. "This will be a great learning experience for them."
That process begins in the middle, where linebacker Grant Collins has turned heads this spring. "He's a presence," Ash says. "He just needs to keep learning, keep growing." The redshirt freshman was one of the top Bobcat scout team players in 2014, and is one of several players in the defense's front seven who will receive opportunities – and evaluation – in the spring before a host of transfers arrive in the fall. Others include defensive linemen Zach Wright and Tucker Yates.
In the first two weeks of spring drills, transfer safeties Bryson McCabe, Desman Carter and freshman Demonte King (presently injured) have transformed that position from a question mark to a potential strength. Safety and cornerback remain thinned by injury, with Bryce Alley and Bryson Keeton manning the corners.
MSU's offensive stable is deep and talented, and while Ash says the spring generally offers the most thorough evaluation of the ground game, he hopes to see the ball in the air Saturday. "We haven't really gone down the field a lot (yet this spring), but I hope we're able to complete some passes today and showcase some of our speed at receiver." Freshmen Justin Paige and Jayshawn Gates flashed that spring last fall, but the receiver corps was boosted this spring by the addition of transfer Brandon Brown. Mitch Griebel and Mitchell Herbert also return after outstanding 2014 seasons.
