“It was a very challenging day,” MSU Head Nordic Coach Kristina Trygstad-Saari said. “The snow conditions made the waxing difficult, and the skiers had to battle a very hilly course 3-4 times."
Friday the 13th proved unlucky for the Montana State ski team at the 2015 NCAA Championships, Friday morning at the Mt. Van Hoevenberg course. Just three of MSU's six skiers scored points in the Nordic classic races and the Bobcats dropped from seventh to eighth in the team standings.
Cambria McDermott continued her late season spark finishing 15th overall, covering the 15K course in 49:47.6. She was followed by Annie Liotta, 34th, 53:03.6, and Lina Hultin, 39th, 54:48.0. Both Liotta and Hultin finished outside the team scoring.
"It was a very challenging day," MSU Head Nordic Coach Kristina Trygstad-Saari said. "The snow conditions made the waxing difficult, and the skiers had to battle a very hilly course 3-4 times. Cambria had a solid classic race, finishing in 15th. She was battling it out for eighth place during the first part of the race, but as the pack broke up she fell back a bit."
New Mexico's Emilie Cedervaern won the women's classic title in 47:40.3
On the men's side, Forrest Mahlen and Sawyer Kesselheim placed 25th and 26th, respectively, to combine for 11 points. Mahlen, who earned First-Team All-America honors in the freestyle on Wednesday, clocked a 59:08.8 for 20K in the classic. Kesselheim was one-second behind in 59:09.08. Erik Axelsson finished outside the team scoring, placing 35th in 1:00:44.8.
"The men's race went out so fast," Trygstad-Saari said. "The pace was incredible, given the difficulty of this course. Our guys just didn't have it in their legs, and they couldn't hold the pace. Each of our skiers gave it their all, and we're proud of them for that. They all fought to the finish."
Fredrik Schwencke of Northern Michigan won the men's individual championship in 56:12.3.
The University of Colorado reclaimed the lead in the team race moving in front of Utah for the top spot with 388 points. The Buffaloes are followed in the top ten by Utah 381, New Mexico 327, Denver 290, Vermont 272, Dartmouth 224, Northern Michigan 193, Montana State 176, Middlebury 165 and Alaska-Anchorage 156.
The NCAA Championships will conclude on Saturday with the men's and women's slalom races at Whiteface Mountain.
