ABOUT THE BOBCATS:
For the third consecutive season the Montana State ski team has qualified a full 12-member squad for the NCAA Skiing Championships. Montana State is one of only eight teams to qualify a full contingent and one of just seven that will compete in Lake Placid. All six teams that compete in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association qualified full teams, while only Vermont from the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association and Northern Michigan of the Central Collegiate Ski Association (Nordic only in CCSA) fielded full squads. In all, 148 student-athletes qualified for the national meet. Qualifying for the Bobcats is Nordic members Erik Axelson, Sawyer Kesselheim, Forrest Mahlen, Lina Hultin, Annie Liotta and Cambria McDermott. Qualifying on the alpine side is Garret Driller, David Neuhauser, David Owsley, Kari Hole, Stephanie Irwin and Benedicte Lyche. Kesselheim, a product of Bozeman High School, earned Second-Team All-America honors last winter after finishing ninth in the 20-kilometer men's freestyle.
SEEKING THE PODIUM:
Montana State will look to claim its first individual title since Dan Brelsford won gold at the 1978 championships in slalom. Three Bobcats claimed podium spots this winter and have legitimate chances of winning the top spot at the NCAA meet. Sophomore David Neuhauser was been one of the West Region's hottest racers, after winning the giant slalom at the Alaska Invitational, and placing second in GS at the RMISA/NCAA West Region meet. Freshman Garret Driller is coming off an individual title in the slalom at the RMISA/NCAA West Region meet, two weeks ago. On the Nordic side, Cambria McDermott, who finished third at the Utah Invite in the 5K freestyle, is MSU's best bet at a medal, as is Sawyer Kesselheim, a 2014 All-America in men's freestyle.
