Bobcat Game Day Notebook #10: Cats Battle Injury Bug

MSU fields patched-together lineup for second straight year vs. ISU
The injury bug that bit the Bobcats last weekend kept on biting as the week progressed, and the effect could be evident today.
As many as three starters on each side of the ball could be out of the Montana State starting lineups today because of injury, and one more because of a suspension. The right side of MSU's offensive line, guard Kyle Godecke and tackle Alex Eekhoff, stayed home because of injuries, as did cornerback Tre'von Strong. Defensive linemen Tucker Yates (tackle) and Tyrone Fa'anono (end) and cornerback Bryson Keeton are doubtful to play today, but their status will all be determined at game time. Safety DeMonte King also stayed home for a violation of team rules.
Caleb Gillis makes his first career start at right guard, and Dylan Mahoney makes his third at right tackle. Bryce Alley starts for Strong, and Connor Thomas and Robert Wilcox (first career start) move into the vacated defensive line positions. Khari Garcia starts for King.
Quarterback Dakota Prukop and left guard JP Flynn each warmed up, and are expected to start.

Amidst the wave of injuries, appreciation can only grow for the man who will match Montana State's iron man record this afternoon when the Bobcat offense jogs onto the field for its first play. John Weidenaar will start his 48th consecutive game as a Bobcat today, tying left tackle Brent Swaggert and defensive end Jon Montoya (both 2000-03) for the longest such streak in school history. Swaggert and Montoya both played for MSU coach Mike Kramer, who will be on the sideline opposite Weidenaar today as Idaho State's head coach.

There will be quite a collection of Bobcat history on the Holt Arena turf Saturday. Idaho State linebackers coach Roger Cooper and Bobcat defensive coordinator Kane Ioane conspired to lead MSU to Big Sky Championships in 2002 and '03, with Ioane winning league defensive MVP honors as a senior in 2003. Cooper won those honors the next season as a senior. MSU linebackers coach Jody Owens is also a former Big Sky defensive MVP as an MSU linebacker.
