Bobcats Ready for Mountain Regional In New Mexico
11/12/2015 3:45:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Cross Country
The Montana State harriers travel to Albuquerque, NM to compete in the Mountain Regional Cross Country Championships Friday afternoon. The women's 6K race is set to begin at 12 p.m. and the men's 10K will start shortly after at 1 p.m. at the University of New Mexico North Gold Course.
"We are looking for improvement from the Conference cross country meet," head cross country coach Lyle Weese said. "This meet is likely to be an ending of this year's cross country season, but it is also a beginning of working toward future goals during indoor and outdoor track and also next year's cross country season."
Newcomers Alyssa Snyder and Diego Leon will likely lead be front runners for MSU, after showing success in their debut season as Bobcats. Snyder's top finish came at the UM Invite in Missoula, placing second with a 17:59.22 mark. Leon has shown progression throughout the season, while recovering from an injury. The junior-transfer crossed the finish line at the 26:33.9 mark at the conference championships, finishing 18th. Rachel Atwood will push the team as well after her 20th place finish at conference.
"Alyssa and Diego have both been going through the adjustment process of being in a new place right in the middle of a competitive cross country season. Just like for anyone starting at a new college and competing right off the bat, this has been a challenge, especially so for Diego as he has struggled with injuries that have compromised his training. However, both Diego and Alyssa have handled the challenge well and been solid contributors to the team and I expect the same from them this weekend."
The field is packed with both No. 1 Nationally ranked teams, Colorado (men's) and New Mexico (Women's), in addition to four other top 30 teams on both sides. Colorado's women's are currently the second ranked team in the region and country, in addition to Utah (3/20), Weber State (4/25) and BYU (5/24). BYU holds the third spot in the nation on the men's side, while UTEP (3/11), Air Force (4/21) and Colorado State (5/25) are also ranked.
