Long-time MSU assistant to play more prominent role within coaching staff
Kane Ioane, a Montana State assistant football coach for the past decade, has been promoted to Co-Defensive Coordinator, MSU Head Coach Rob Ash announced Friday.
"This move is a tribute to Kane's hard work, loyalty and dedication to the Bobcat football program," Ash said. "I want to breathe new life into our defense and I believe that Kane moving into an elevated role is a step in that direction. His work ethic and passion for Montana State and this program are inspiring and this will positively affect our players and staff."
Ioane, who has risen to positions of progressively more responsibility within the Bobcat coach staff throughout his coaching career, joins long-time MSU assistant Jamie Marshall in the co-coordinator role. In earlier seasons the two collaborated to coach Bobcat linebackers, although Marshall has led the MSU secondary the past two seasons.
Ioane joined the Bobcat staff in the fall of 2005, after one of the most brilliant playing careers in school history. He was a four-year starter from 2000-03, becoming the first Bobcat to earn All-America honors of some kind in four different seasons, and was Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. He remains the league's all-time leading tackler. The Billings product served as MSU's linebackers assistant from 2005-08, rising to linebackers coach in 2009. He has held that title ever since.
Marshall joined Ash's first MSU staff in 2007, coordinating the Bobcats' defense in each of his eight seasons and serving as assistant head coach for the past year. The former two-time all-conference safety under Ash at Drake was an assistant at his alma mater from 2000-06.
While Ash indicated that exact distribution of duties is yet to be determined, he looks forward to Ioane's increased involvement. "Kane will be heavily involved in every aspect of our defense from this point forward," Ash said.
