Bobcat senior lands league, national honors in wake of record-setting game
How versatile is Montana State senior Shawn Johnson?
Within minutes of each other Monday afternoon, the Bobcat running back earned FCS National Offensive Player of the Week honors from The Sports Network and Special Teams Player of the Week honors from ROOT Sports and the Big Sky Conference. The kudos come in the wake of Johnson's record-setting 374 all-purpose yards in Saturday's 103-point shootout with Eastern Washington.
"I thought it was a spectacular performance," said Bobcat coach Rob Ash. "Shawn impacts a game in so many different ways. He's been fabulous on special teams for three seasons, but he was excellent whenever he was on the field on Saturday."
Johnson rushed for 150 yards, a career best, and scored one touchdown on the ground. He also caught three passes for 62 yards, turning two of those catches into scores. The Bakersfield, Calif., product returned a punt 22 yards to set up a Bobcat touchdown, and brought back four kickoffs for 141 yards.
In addition to shattering the school record of 305 yards set in 2006, Johnson's effort was the sixth-best day in Big Sky history. He averaged 17.0 yards per touch, and his 181.3 yards per game leads the Big Sky and is ninth in the FCS. Johnson's 3,519 career all-purpose yards is fourth in MSU history.
Johnson was also honored – along with MSU quarterback Dakota Prukop – as one of the Beyond Sports Network FCS Athletes of the Week. Montana State hosts North Dakota at 2 pm Saturday for Homecoming. The school will honor its 1964 Big Sky Championship squad and the 1984 National Champions during the game.
