Ash will focus on how plays end during fall's first live session
One of Montana State's two high-profile position battles sorted itself out in unfortunate fashion on Tuesday when junior offensive guard Kyle Godecke suffered a foot injury in practice. He will be out indefinitely.
The loss, to a player who started all 12 games at left guard in 2013, sets Montana State's starting offensive line for at least the season opener August 28 at perennial Sun Belt Conference power Arkansas State, according to Rob Ash. Sophomore JP Flynn moves to left guard, where he starts between center Joel Horn and tackle John Weidenaar. Quinn Catalano slides to right guard, and Alex Eekhoff takes over at right tackle. Eekhoff and Horn had been battling for the final open starting spot, with Catalano ticketed for whichever of those positions remained unclaimed.
On Thursday, however, Ash's thoughts were with Godecke. "This is a very disappointing injury because Kyle has worked so hard," Ash said of the 6-5, 315 lb lineman from Dillon. "In terms of the team on the field, we'll move forward and I have full confidence in Coach Mac (Jason McEndoo, MSU's offensive line coach) and everyone in that group. But I feel terrible for Kyle, and we'll work hard to support him as he works his way back."
The Bobcat football team takes Friday off before Saturday's 9:15 am practice, which will conclude at around 10:30 am with a limited scrimmage.
