Montana State freshman David Neuhauser just missed All-America status, placing 12th overall in the giant slalom on the opening day of the 2014 NCAA Skiing Championships to guide MSU to a ninth place team showing, Wednesday afternoon at Park City Mountain Resort.
Neuhauser, a native of Brandenberg, Austria, posted a two-run total of 2:01.56. After a mediocre first run, Neuhauser rattled off a 1:02.81 clocking in the final race. It was the 12th fastest time in the second heat, tying him with Colorado's Kasper Hietanen.
"David wasn't very fast in the first run," MSU alpine coach Kevin Francis said. "However, he came down the second run and skied much better. As a freshman, he is still learning every day, but we are really impressed with him and feel that he will be a big part of our team's future."
Neuhauser racked-up 18.5 points for the Bobcats. Also scoring for MSU were Ryan McConnell, 23rd, 2:02.67, and David Owsley, 29th, 2:03.90.
"Ryan skied his heart out today," Francis said. "He did awesome."
Utah's Mark Engel won the NCAA giant slalom title in 1:58.56.
On the women's side, second-team All-RMISA performer and senior Kelly McBroom was on pace for a top 10 finish, before crashing on her second run.
"Kelly had a good first run and was racing for the podium on the second run," Francis said. "She was skiing really well when she hit a soft spot and her skis just washed out."
Junior Stephanie Irwin had MSU's best showing, finishing with a two-run total of 2:00.95 and placing 17th overall. Also contributing was senior Emily Danza, who finished her first ever NCAA race 25th overall in 2:02.75.
Denver's Kristine Haugen won the women's crown in 1:56.39.
"It was great to see the seniors representing MSU with their best skiing to date," Francis added.
After the opening event, Utah sits atop the team standings with 165 points. The Utes are followed in the top ten by New Mexico 130, Denver 130, Colorado 127.5, Vermont 101, Alaska-Anchorage 62, Middlebury 58, Dartmouth 54, MSU 48.5, and New Hampshire 45.
