USTFCCCA announces academic individual, team awards
Heather Demorest has been named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Cross Country Team for the 2013 season, following the close of not only a commendable senior season but complete career.
This was just one more accolade to book end her cross country career at Montana State. While boasting a cumulative GPA of 3.33 in Community Health, Demorest supplemented the award with her eighth place finish at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, and 58th in the National Championships. Demorest was the first Bobcat to compete at the NCAA meet since 2003.
Abbey D'Agostino of Dartmouth was the 2013 Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year, with a 3.70 GPA.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, individuals must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have earned All-America honors at the NCAA championships or have finished in the top 15 at the Regional Championships.
In addition to Demorest's individual recognition, the Bobcat Women's Cross Country team also accumulated an award for their classroom efforts. The USTFCCCA announced the 2013 All-Academic Teams on Feb. 14, 2014.
This marks the 18th consecutive season the women's team has earned these national honors. Posting a team GPA of 3.24, they also had strong team finishes at both the Big Sky Championship and the NCAA Regionals. The Friars of Providence were named the 2013 Women's Division I Scholar Team of the Year, with a 3.38 GPA.
"Our team excelled in the classroom and on the Cross Country course this past season," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "This was our best season in several years, maintaining our reputation with excellence in academics and taking major strides in our running success."
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
