Bobcats Open Spring Football Drills Tuesday
3/18/2014 9:21:00 PM | Football
Familiar surroundings without some familiar faces
Familiar sights and sounds abounded.
Snow was pushed up against the interior walls of Bobcat Stadium, the rhythm of football made thegulf between November and March melt away in moments, and Rob Ash fielded questions about the practice just past and the 14 to come effortlessly.
But there was something different. Something unfamiliar.
"Sure it was," Ash said when asked if it was different to conduct a practice without four-year stalwarts such as departed quarterback DeNarius McGhee. "Especially on offense, because all four of those guys (McGhee, running back Cody Kirk, and receiver Tanner Bleskin) were marquee players at each of their positions."
But time marches on, players graduate, and new springs arrive with adjustments for everyone. Ash has seen plenty of great players come and go in his nearly four decades as a head coach. On a sunny afternoon in Bozeman, he was ready to watch those in the next wave begin to assert themselves.
Ash was pleased with the play of the three quarterbacks vying to step into the position vacated by McGhee. "I thought they all did a good job," Ash said. "Tanner was a little rusty having not played the position for several years, but he'll get there. They all did some good things."
In general terms, Ash was pleased with the day's proceedings. "I loved the energy," he said. "I liked the communication. Some teams are just able to communicate well, and I think this group is terrific at that."
The Cats practice again Thursday afternoon at 3:30 pm, and then again on Saturday' morning.
