Goals for the Season: The Weight Room
12/10/2014 1:52:00 PM | General
Weight training during the season can be quite a challenge, but every year my goals are always the same; to maintain the strength levels that were gained during the off season, make sure our team is powerful and explosive, and to help keep our team as healthy as possible. We have these three things then I believe our chances of competing and winning are high.
My first priority with in season training is keeping the team healthy. I work very closely with our Athletic Trainer to come with team wide injury prevention exercises. This is done by looking at what movements are done on the court and assessing the risk of injury then attacking those areas. We spend about half of our training session doing these preventative exercises. My motto is "Healthy athletes are the ones that are playing and winning".
My second major focus is to maintain our strength levels and keep our team as powerful and explosive as possible. The team keeps a set weight training schedule all the way throughout the season. We train three times a week during the pre-season then transition to two times during conference play. During our training sessions we continue to do movements that helped us to gain the strength and power from the off season. The intensity and volume of these exercises are adjusted to work in conjunction with the demands of practice and game play. Another component to in season training is continuing to develop those on the team who are red shirting. I train and work with these individuals more throughout the season continuing to develop strength, power, and athleticism.
