Bobcat Student-Athletes Show Vast Improvement in Graduation Success Rate

Varsity athletes out-perform general student population at MSU
Montana State University's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) hit an all-time high this fall, according to an October report issued by the NCAA.
Eighty-five percent of Bobcat student-athletes that entered MSU during the 2007-08 academic year graduated in the time covered by the study, according to the report. That is an improvement of more than 20% from the 2002-03 academic year, which marked the beginning of Peter Fields' tenure as Director of MSU Athletics.
Bobcat student-athletes also graduate at a rate higher than the MSU student body. The student-athlete four-class average of 67% far out-performs the general student population (which graduated at a 49% rate). Also, the 2007-08 freshman class graduation rate was better than the non-athlete equivalent at MSU by 27% (76% to 49%).
Among sports measured, every MSU athletic program but one increased its GSR from the 2001-02 academic year to 2007-08. In fact, six of the seven sports groupings measured increased their GSR by at least 15%, and MSU's all-sports rate, and those of football men's basketball, lead the Big Sky Conference in the 2007-08 cohort.
Bobcat student-athletes not only graduate, but excel academically while at MSU. MSU's varsity athletic teams have compiled a grade point average of 3.0 or better for 25 consecutive semesters.
