Montana State sophomore Annie Liotta paced the Bobcat skiers at the University of Colorado/Spencer James Nelson Memorial, Friday afternoon in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
Montana State sophomore Annie Liotta paced the Bobcat skiers at the University of Colorado/Spencer James Nelson Memorial, Friday afternoon in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
Liotta covered the five-kilometer classic course in 17:26.26, finishing eighth overall – MSU's only top ten showing of the day. For her effort, Liotta garnered 23 team points. She was followed in scoring by Jessica Yeaton, 17th, 18:05.8; and Isabella Smith, 21st, 18:20.0.
Also finishing for MSU were Kate Backstrum, 22nd, and Julia Hayes, 30th.
Denver's Sylvia Nordskar won the women's title in 16:23.7.
The Montana State men's squad was led by Marshall Opel and Sawyer Kesselheim, who placed 18th and 19th, respectively. Opel covered the 10k race in 30:02.9, while Kesselheim was right behind at 30:07.3. Forrest Mahlen completed the Bobcats' top three, finishing 23rd, with a clocking of 30:47.8.
Also contributing for MSU was 2013 NCAA Championship qualifier Patrick Madden, who placed 25th in 31:14.5.
Colorado's Rune Oedegaard, fresh off competing at the Norwegian National Cross Country Championships, won the men's crown in 28:28.2.
DU sits atop the team standings after the opening day. The Pioneers totaled 176 points, followed by New Mexico 154, Utah 152, CU 137, Alaska-Anchorage 119, MSU 94 and Wyoming 76.
Saturday's events will feature the alpine slalom and the Nordic freestyle races.
