Bobcats Finish Fifth at MSU Invitational

The Montana State women’s Nordic team continued its early season successes placing three racers in the top 10 of the ten-kilometer freestyle event, Sunday afternoon at the MSU Invitational to lift the Bobcats to a fifth place team finish.

The Montana State women's Nordic team continued its early season successes placing three racers in the top 10 of the ten-kilometer freestyle event, Sunday afternoon at the MSU Invitational to lift the Bobcats to a fifth place team finish.
Kate Backstrum led the Bobcat contingent finishing fifth overall in 30:03.9. She was followed by Jessica Yeaton, seventh, 30:20.9; and Annie Liotta, tenth, 31:15.0.
For the two-day invitational, the MSU women's Nordic team posted 153 points, which was second only to team champion Denver. Combined with the women's alpine squad, the MSU women finished third overall, while the men's team was sixth with 182 points.
Sophomore Sawyer Kesselheim bounced back from an early season illness with an eighth place showing in the freestyle with a time of 25:54.7 to pace the Bobcats. He was followed by Pat Madden, 14th, and Marshall Opel 17th.
Sam Monsen, who qualified for the NCAA Championships last winter as a freshman, posted MSU's top finish in Sunday's slalom event. Monsen placed 13th overall with a two-run clocking of 1:39.24. He was followed by David Neuhauser, 21st, and David Owsley, 30th.
The MSU women's alpine team was led in the slalom by senior Kelly McBroom, who placed 17th in 1:40.94. Also scoring points for the Bobcats were Emily Danza, 19th, and Marissa Riopelle, 22nd.
DU ran away with the team title notching 737 points. The Pioneers were followed by Utah 557, New Mexico 555, Colorado 496.5, MSU 438, Alaska-Anchorage 429, Westminster 225.5, Wyoming 143, and Colorado Mountain College 55.
