Senior receiver helps get Jake Bleskin off to good start
It was a busy afternoon at Bobcat Stadium where Montana State dispatched of Colorado State - Mesa 26-0. So busy, in fact, that there just wasn't enough space for one of the days top performers.
Most of the talk centered around the debut of sophomore quarterback Jake Bleskin, along with the play of the defense, the two touchdown catches by Brian Flotkoetter, 10 catches by his big brother Tanner, and the confusing defense deployed by Mesa.
So much going on that the play of senior Jon Ellis, who had seven catches and
110 yards, was kind of lost in the din.
Ellis was a key player in Bleskin's big day. On the first play of the game for the MSU offense he hauled in a 44-yard pass on a ball that was underthrown. Ellis made the adjustment and managed to bring the ball into his hands despite having to contort his body to do so.
That catch did a lot not just for the players, but the coaches as well.
"Obviously we didn't have any qualms about Jake judging from the first play,"
MSU head coach Rob Ash said.
Later in the first half the Bobcat' coaches dialed up a similar play and once the again the ball was underthrown, but once again Ellis was able to adjust and make the catch for another 44-yard gain this one coming on a 3rd and 9 play.
All told Ellis had three grabs that went for first downs. He also had a run for a short gain and led the team in all-purpose yards with 111.
MSU's three starting receivers caught 22 passes on the day for 278 yards and drew the praise of Jake Bleskin.
"I had 10 studs with me out there and four or five of them are receivers," he said. "It was just really important for me to know these guys trusted me."
And perhaps not so bad of Bleskin to have trust in Ellis and those other nine studs.
