A look at a local product with 35 days remaining until kickoff
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2013 season on August 29 against Monmouth. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set are welcome to blamberty@msubobcats.com.
#35
Morris Gates-Mouton, RB: A redshirt last season, Morris Gates-Mouton impressed as a scout team player and during the spring with his quickness and general football aptitude. As a running back he'll have to contend with his stature – he's undersized at 5-9, 167 – but Bobcat coaches remain impressed, and Gates-Mouton earned the opportunity to compete for playing time in the fall.
Spotlight Player: Players don't come much more homegrown than Bret Chapman. An all-state star down 11th Street at Bozeman High School, Chapman walked on at MSU in 1978 and became a part-time starter in the next year. Chapman started two years for the Bobcats, and drew praise for his toughness and physical play at a corner.
Bonus Player: The first known example of the Hysell Axiom (see #36 for explanation), TT Ryan came to MSU with a reputation as a tremendous blocker. That reputation was well-earned at Cal State Fullerton, and Timmy Terrific helped Hysell kick the ground game into full gear in 1993. He paved the way for fantastic seasons by running backs Fred Moore and Clint Morton.
Through the Years: Dick Little (1937), Alton Zempel (1941), Mike McCormick (1946-47), Gene Stergar (1948), Fred Peres (1953), Jerry Miller (1954-55), Darrell Garoutte (1970-71), Scott Shriver (1972-74), Mike Vidmar (1975-77), Bret Chapman (1978-81), Skip Morten (1982), Rodney Holland (1983-85), Brett Davis (1986), Bob Wilkinson (1987-90), TT Ryan (1993-95), Shon Flores (1997), Carson Souter (1998), Adam Cordeiro (1999), Vernon Williams (2000-01), David Mayfield (2002-03), Travis Doroski (2004), Isaiah Taito (2005-06), Michael Boran (2007), Tyler Volkman (2008), Preston Gale (2009), Morris Gates-Mouton (2012-)
