A look at a bruising fullback from the mid-1990s
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2013 season on August 29 against Monmouth. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set are welcome to blamberty@msubobcats.com.

Brad Nordahl, CB: Brad Nordahl is a scrappy cornerback who came to MSU from Frenchtown with quite a sports background. His father is a former head rodeo coach at the University of Montana, while his mother played volleyball for the Bobcats. Nordahl will compete for playing time this year, particularly on special teams.
Spotlight Player: There's a theory among baseball 'analysts' (which is another word for 'nerds') that the more highly a catcher is regarded for his defense, the less respect he will get for his back. In the 1990s, that theory applied perfectly to Cliff Hysell for his use of the fullback. The more highly regarded that player was for his blocking, the less he was going to get the ball, regardless of his actual ability. Let's call this the Hysell Axiom, simply because we''ll revisit it tomorrow. A perfect example of the Hysell Axiom was Travis Cormaney. A bruising but raw fullback when he began his varsity career in 1994, he carried just twice for 15 yards. As a sophomore in 1995, Cormaney battered his way for 86 yards on just 13 carries. The next year, as his playing time and blocking ability went up, his carries went down (six, for 15 yards). As a senior, now viewed as a crucial cog of the Bobcat offensve because of ability to clear paths for ball carriers, Cormaney carried one time. One. All season. He turned that into a one-yard gain.
Through the Years: Oswald Falkenstern (1937), Kenneth Schmidt (1941), Neil Brocks (1946), Luther Lalum (1947-48), Neil Hart (1949), Neil Hart (1950), Bob Roloff (1953), Terry Paoletti (1954), Don Duntsch (1970), Dennis Iverson (1982-83), John Russell (1985-86), Steve Perkins (1987-90), Marlan Bacon (1991-92), Travis Cormaney (1993-97), Aaron Den Hartog (1999), Ryan Haught (2000), Brad Johnson (2001), Clayton Curley (2002-05), Tate Switzer (2006-07), Ricky Evans (2008-09), Brad Nordahl (2011-)
