With 37 days left until kickoff, a look at a couple of memorable #37s
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2013 season on August 29 against Monmouth. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set are welcome to blamberty@msubobcats.com.

Deonte Flowers, CB: The first thing you notice about Deonte Flowers is that smile. Man, does that kid have a smile! The second thing you notice is how good a cornerback he is. Deonte enters this season as a third-year cornerback and a key cog on a defense that is plugging quite a few holes to begin fall camp. Known for his athleticism and quickness, Flowers' ability to hinder opposing passing games will be important for the Bobcats early in 2013.
Spotlight Player: Mike Kramer called them soldiers, members of a football team that don't get much acclaim but who are crucial to a program's success. Nic Tognetti was a soldier. He came to MSU in 1997 from Stevensville as a running back, then transitioned to safety, and really never found traction as a regular. But he provided valuable depth because he was such a smart football player and always knew his assignments. In the fall of 2001, as strange a season as MSU has ever had for so many reasons, the Bobcats traveled to Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane to face Eastern Washington. Having snapped a long, miserable losing streak at Weber State a few weeks earlier (and about 13 months away from snapping another one in Missoula), MSU fought desperately not just for a rare victory over Eastern, but for a win against Kramer's former school. The Bobcats trailed 38-34 in the fourth quarter, but scored two late touchdowns to win it. In the crucial second half of this back-and-forth affair, played without star running back Ryan Johnson, Tognetti carried a dozen times to help salt away this win. The Cats finished the season 5-6, a lot of near-misses mixed in with the crucial wins. But there's no doubt that the big win at Joe Albi on a Saturday night in 2001 paved the way for much more important wins to come.
