Bill Schmidt was an unassuming star on one of MSU's greatest teams
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2013 season on August 29 against Monmouth. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set are welcome to blamberty@msubobcats.com.

Dylan Alt, OL: Dylan Alt enters the Bobcat program as an incoming freshman offensive lineman with a big frame and a ton of projectability. The Bobcat coaches are high on this Roundup product.
Spotlight Player: Nothing about Bill Schmidt was fancy. He came to MSU from Sheridan, and established himself as a three-year starter, but his greatest contribution came after he was granted an additional year of eligibility due to the a newly-implemented NCAA retroactive redshirt rule. That 'extra' year etched Schmidt into the annals of an all-time Bobcat great, and helped spur MSU to the 1984 National Championship. Schmidt was lauded for his consistency early in his starting career, but was much more than just consistent as a senior, earning First Team All-Big Sky and First Team All-America honors.
Through the Years: Cecil Kent (1956), Darryl Hueth (1957), Dick Kramer (1958), Dan Greer (1959), Tom Monterossi (1960-63), Tay Roy Kibble (1966-68), Dan Korber (1968-69), Roger Martin (1970), Dave Clutch (1971), Ron Iverson (1972-74), Jim Regan (1975), John Beach (1977), Byrl Thompson (1978), Gary Fickle (1979-80), Bill Schmidt (1981-84), Pat Williams (1985-86), Ken Eiden (1987-91), Eric Paulson (1992-93), Lance Lanning (1994), Adam Houts (1996-97), Carlton Carpenter (1999), Steve Gunnels (2001), Jose Sanchez (2002), Chris Smith (2004-07), Clint Mentzel (2008-09)
